The Faculty of Medicine congratulates Hadar Israeli, in recognition of being awarded the Rappaport Prize for Biomedical Research in the category of Outstanding Doctoral Students for 2022.
Hadar Israeli, a student in the MD-PhD program, is researching obesity mechanisms as part of her doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Dr. Danny Ben-Zvi at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In her study, she examines the mechanism of action in the brain that is responsible for the feeling of satiety - and specifically the mutation in the melanocortin 4 receptor or MC4 for short. This receptor is linked to hunger and satiety mechanisms in the body that are expressed in the hypothalamus in the brain, as part of a group of cells that calculate the energy balance in the body through the sensation of various metabolic signals. These findings, together with the three-dimensional decoding of the receptor, shed light on the control mechanisms of the hunger and satiety processes in our body and are expected to help in the development of new drugs against obesity.
