Housing in Israel: A Public Health Crisis Hidden in Plain Sight

In a new policy analysis published in the Israel Journal of Health Policy Research, Jordan Hannink Attal and Professor Yehuda Neumark of the Hebrew University highlight the health consequences of housing conditions in Israel. Against the backdrop of urban renewal projects that largely exclude the periphery, ongoing regulatory neglect, lack of safe and affordable housing, and regional disparities are contributing to financial and psychological stress with serious public health implications. Over one-third of households in Israel spend more than 30% of their income on housing — a burden linked to both physical and mental health risks. The authors call for a national, interdisciplinary initiative to integrate health and housing into policy decision-making in Israel.
