Biography
Prof. Priel received his B.Sc. (Magna Cum Laude; graduated 2000) in Chemistry from Ben Gurion University. He received his M.Sc. (Magna Cum Laude) in Life Sciences from Ben Gurion University in 2002, where he studied with Prof. Shai Silberberg the modulation mechanism of P2X4 receptor by ivermectin. He received his Ph.D. (Suma cum laude) in Molecular Neurobiology from the Hebrew University in 2007, where he studied with Prof. Yael Stern-Bach the structure-function of ionotropic glutamate receptors. He did his postdoctoral training with Prof. David Julius at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), identifying toxins that interact with TRP channels. Prof. Priel joined the Faculty of Medicine School of Pharmacy as a Senior Lecturer in 2011 to establish a laboratory studying the structure and operational mechanisms of ion channel proteins. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018 and was awarded the Prusiner-Abramsky Research Award in Basic Neuroscience in 2016 and the Dr. A Harvey & Mrs. Beryl Granat Prize for study in Neuro-anesthesia in 2018. His laboratory is currently using biochemical, molecular biological, biophysical and structural techniques to investigate the structure and functional mechanisms of ion channels with emphasis on pain receptors.
