Research Hub: Epigenetics

Coordinators: Prof. Asaf Hellman and Dr. Maayan Salton

The Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine may accurately be called the international home of epigenetics. It was here that this field was founded, and that the basic rules of epigenetic gene regulation were established. Today, scientists at IMRIC continue to be the pioneers of this field, initiating new research directions in the ongoing effort to understand the epigenetic code and its implications for health and disease.

The purpose of this hub is to bring together scientists and physicians working in the fields of epigenetics and nuclear architecture in health and disease. Recently it was demonstrated that epigenetics provide a link between cancer and other common diseases. Epigenetic programming patterns are responsible for the most basic aspects of disease biology, and deciphering this code thus represents a promising route for better diagnosis, treatment and prevention of various diseases.

Aside from organizing group seminars and lectures, the hub aims to encourage funding opportunities for collaborative projects and to offer new graduate courses. Through this hub, we hope to find funding for common equipment services, particularly next generation sequencing technologies and associated bioinformatics resources needed for carrying out epigenome wide analysis.

Current hub members:

Prof. Yehudit Bergman: Stem cell biology; molecular biology of lymphomas and leukemias; DNA methylation.

Prof. Howard Cedar: DNA methylation and chromatin structure, major effectors in all forms of cancer.

Prof. Yuval Dor: Biology of the pancreas, diabetes and pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Rachel Eiges: Epigenetics of unstable repeat expansion pathologies.

Prof. Asaf Hellman: Epigenetics of populations.

Dr. Maayan Salton: Epigenetic regulation of alternative splicing.

Prof. Itamar Simon: Applying the tools of genomics and system biology to the study of mammalian cell cycle.

We are accepting new members.
