Preventing kidney disease in premature newborns

Kidney development stops abruptly at the 35th week of gestation. Despite multiple kidney injuries throughout life, he kidney lacks regeneration ability of new nephrons. Patients with a history of prematurity have a significantly higher risk of chronic kidney disease in adulthood secondary to low nephron number.
We aim to understand the changes which take place as a result of preterm birth which leads to a low nephron number to find ways to reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease in this population.
